Chillin’ In Ankara

Chillin’ In Ankara

Even though I am born and raised in Brooklyn, New York I am very much Nigerian as well, just in case my name didn’t give that away. Both my parents were born and raised in Anambra, Nigeria. #IgboKwenu

Growing up Nigerian, I always had Ankara made clothing for functions, weddings, celebrations and even causal wear. My high school prom dress was even made out of Ankara, this way I knew for sure no one was going to have on the same dress as me!

What is Ankara?

Ankara commonly known as “African prints”,”African wax prints” “Holland wax” and “Dutch wax”, is a 100% cotton fabric with vibrant patterns. It is usually a colorful cloth and is primarily associated with Africa because of its tribal-like patterns and motifs

Chillin’ In Ankara is going to be an ode to Ankara highlighting the clothing and some cool designers who create them.

This look was created by Wakaddy, a female tailor based in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. Her signature creation is a pencil skirt with fringe on the bottom. The fabric was personally hand selected by me at the Balogun Market Place in Lagos. I love how mixed fabrics compliment each other so I bought these two patterns, knowing the purple would bring it all together.
